So, how did I end up offering help with book titles? A happy accident…
In a long-ago conversation with an author of a just-finished book, I told him he could use some help with book title ideas. We brainstormed a bit, he loved one of mine, and the light bulb went on.
Not that it was that big of a stretch…
15 years in sales and marketing before launching a freelance marketing-copywriting practice in 1994 helped me understand “audience” and “writing to sell.”
Over the years, I found I enjoyed writing ad copy, postcard direct mail, headlines, taglines, slogans, product naming, etc.
These projects required a skill for the short, sweet, compact—the ability to “nuggetize” an idea.
Offering help with book titles was just a natural evolution. So, what’s it mean for you?
You reap the benefits of the natural integration of 35+ years of combined skills and expertise.
Besides helping my author friend, I initially put my skills with book title ideas to work on MY first book, and first self-published effort: the award-winning 2000 Book-of-the-Month Club selection, The Well-Fed Writer. I’d like to think the title contributed to the success of both it and two updates of TWFW that followed.
Given the book’s subject (lucrative “commercial” writing), and the well-worn cliché of the “starving writer,” what better book title idea than one that conveys a writing direction that pays exceptionally well?
The Well-Fed part made an encore in two editions of The Well-Fed Self-Publisher: How to Turn One Book into a Full-Time Living, chronicling how I pulled off the promise of the subtitle.
So, with self-publishing expertise now added to commercial freelancing chops, my coaching practice began attracting more aspiring self-publishers—and, growing requests for help with book titles, as well as back-cover copywriting. And here we are…
I hope to hear from you soon. After all, doesn’t your book deserve the best book title ideas—and final result?
